What Helps Toothache? Simple Ways to Ease the Pain

2 min read

Toothache has a way of showing up exactly when you don’t need it. Late at night, right before work, or the second you sit down to eat something good. The first goal is simple, calm the pain down without making the tooth worse.

Quick Relief at Home

Cold helps too. Hold a cold pack against your cheek, outside, for about 15 to 20 minutes. Don’t put ice directly on the tooth though, extreme cold can actually make a sensitive tooth hurt more. The cheek approach is a lot gentler.

A cold pack works especially well when the pain is throbbing. Saltwater rinsing is cheap and easy, just remember to spit rather than swallow. Over the counter pain medicine can help more directly too, as long as you’re taking it safely and following the directions on the box.

Be Careful What You Put on the Tooth

There’s no shortage of home remedies floating around for toothaches. Some are fine. Others really aren’t worth trying.

Don’t put aspirin directly against your tooth or gum, it can burn or irritate the tissue. Same goes for whatever random household fix someone swears worked for them years ago. Your mouth isn’t the place to experiment.

When to See a Dentist

If the pain sticks around for more than a day or two, keeps returning, or gets worse, book an appointment. A dentist can actually find the problem and deal with it before it turns into something harder to manage.

Swelling around your face or jaw needs prompt attention, especially if it’s getting worse. Fever with tooth pain is a red flag since it could mean infection. And trouble swallowing or breathing means you need urgent care right away, don’t wait around for a home remedy to work.
