How to Brush Your Teeth Properly?

2 min read

Start With the Right Toothbrush

Pick a soft-bristled toothbrush. Honestly, hard bristles aren’t a badge of better cleaning. They can irritate your gums and wear down tooth enamel if you brush aggressively.

Add a Small Amount of Toothpaste

Put a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste on the brush. Wetting the brush first is fine if you like it that way, but it isn’t necessary.

Use Gentle, Small Movements

Start with small, gentle circles or short back-and-forth movements. Move slowly enough that the bristles actually touch the tooth surface rather than skating over it.

Work around the outside of your teeth first. Then move to the inside surfaces. After that, clean the chewing surfaces where food tends to get trapped.

And don’t forget the front teeth. People often rush those because they’re easy to see, while the teeth farther back get a little less attention.

Don’t Ignore Your Gumline

The gumline deserves patience. Angle the bristles slightly toward it and use light pressure. If your gums regularly bleed when you brush, don’t simply decide that bleeding is normal and carry on forever. Persistent bleeding needs a dental check.

You shouldn’t have to scrub harder to feel clean. That’s one of the biggest brushing myths, in my opinion. A toothbrush isn’t a kitchen sponge.

Give Yourself About Two Minutes

Most people underestimate two minutes. It doesn’t sound long, but try counting slowly while brushing and suddenly the bathroom feels very quiet.

A simple timer can help at first. You don’t need to use one forever.

• Two minutes is a good target, even when you’re convinced you’ve already cleaned everything.

• Your tongue gets a quick pass too, which leaves your mouth feeling noticeably fresher afterward.
