Why Some People Don’t Have Them
Wisdom teeth are the third molars at the very back of your mouth. They usually start appearing sometime between the late teens and early twenties, although the timing varies quite a bit. Some never erupt. Some don’t form in the first place.
You Can Have Wisdom Teeth Without Seeing Them
• Four wisdom teeth is common, but it isn’t a rule carved into stone.
• No wisdom teeth at all? Completely possible, and usually nothing to worry about.
What If You Have Only One or Two?
Meera found this out during a routine dental checkup. She had always assumed she had four wisdom teeth because nobody had ever mentioned otherwise. Her dentist showed her the X-ray while she was sitting there trying not to bite down on the little plastic thing used for the image. She had two, and both were sitting comfortably under the gums.
So, having fewer than four is normal too. Your body doesn’t have to produce the full set.
So, Is It Unusual Not to Have Them?
Not at all. Some people get all four. Some get fewer. Some never develop wisdom teeth whatsoever.
And if you’ve reached your twenties without feeling anything at the back of your mouth, don’t assume you’ve somehow missed an important milestone. You may simply be one of the people whose wisdom teeth never showed up.
Which, really, isn’t the worst thing your mouth could decide to leave out.
