How Many Teeth Does an Adult Have?

2 min read

Where Are the 32 Teeth?

Your teeth aren’t all doing the same job. The ones near the front are mainly there to bite into food. Farther back, the teeth are broader and better suited for crushing and grinding, which is why losing a back tooth can feel surprisingly noticeable when you’re eating.

A Simple Way to Count Them

An adult mouth normally has four types of permanent teeth. The total comes from how many of each type you have on the upper and lower jaws.

• 8 incisors, sitting right at the front where they handle most of the biting.

• 4 canines. They’re the sharper-looking teeth beside the incisors, though they’re not nearly as dramatic as movies make them seem.

• 8 premolars, tucked between the canines and molars and useful for breaking food down.

• 12 molars when wisdom teeth are included, with the last four occupying the spots furthest back.

• 32 teeth altogether in the standard adult set, although your own number might be lower for perfectly ordinary reasons.

What About Wisdom Teeth?

This is where the number gets confusing. Someone might say they have 28 teeth and wonder if they’re missing something important. Usually, they’re counting correctly.

Wisdom teeth are the final four molars. They generally develop during the late teens or early twenties, but not everyone gets all four. Some people don’t develop wisdom teeth at all. Others have them sitting below the gum and never see them.

Why Some Adults Have Fewer Teeth

Raj once mentioned that he had only 28 teeth while brushing after dinner. He’d assumed he’d lost four somewhere along the way, which made him check the bathroom mirror twice.

His wisdom teeth had simply never come through. Nothing mysterious.

Does Everyone Have 32 Adult Teeth?

No. 32 is the standard full set, not a rule every adult has to meet.

You could have 28 healthy permanent teeth and never develop wisdom teeth. You could have 30 because only two wisdom teeth appeared. Or you might have had teeth removed earlier in life. The number alone doesn’t tell you whether your mouth is healthy.
