Does a Root Filling Hurt?

2 min read

Most people imagine a root filling as the kind of dental work that makes you grip the chair and wait for the worst. That picture is usually outdated. The strange part is that the tooth causing the biggest problem is often the tooth that feels better once treatment begins.

What Does a Root Filling Feel Like?

The fear usually comes from the word “root.” It sounds deep. Serious. Like someone is working right inside the most sensitive part of your tooth. But the infected tissue inside the tooth has already caused trouble, and the goal of a root filling is to remove that damaged area and seal the space.

The Feeling During Treatment

A few things are normal while the dentist works on your tooth:

• A pushing feeling around the tooth, especially when the dentist is cleaning inside it. It feels odd, but it isn’t the same as pain.

• The sound of dental tools doing their thing. Not exactly relaxing, but your tooth isn’t feeling what your ears are hearing.

Things That Make Recovery Easier

• Softer food for a short while makes eating feel easier, especially on the treated side.

• Taking the medication your dentist recommends is usually enough to handle normal soreness, so there is no need to play hero.

Is a Root Filling Worth the Discomfort?

Yes. I think avoiding a root filling because of fear is one of the worst dental decisions people make. The temporary discomfort of treatment is small compared with the constant pain of an untreated infection.

A root filling lets you keep your natural tooth instead of moving straight towards extraction. And keeping your own tooth usually feels better because it belongs there. Your mouth knows the difference.

Some people describe the whole process as anticlimactic. They walk in expecting a nightmare and walk out wondering why they waited so long.
