What Bleeding Is Normal After Extraction?
Right after the tooth comes out, the socket needs time to form a stable clot. Your dentist will usually place gauze over the area and ask you to bite down firmly. Keep that pressure steady. Constantly lifting the gauze to check the socket is one of the easiest ways to restart bleeding.
What If It Starts Bleeding Again?
Sometimes a socket starts bleeding again after you eat, exercise, bend over, or accidentally disturb the clot. Go back to steady pressure with gauze and sit upright. Give it time.
Avoid smoking and don’t use straws while the socket heals. I also think trying to “test” the area with your tongue is a terrible idea. You gain nothing from poking at it, and you might loosen the clot.
When Is Bleeding a Problem?
• Heavy bleeding that doesn’t slow after sustained pressure needs professional advice, not another hour of guessing.
• Feeling dizzy or faint alongside significant bleeding is a different situation and shouldn’t be brushed off.
Keeping the Clot in Place
The blood clot is doing important work beneath the surface. Protect it during the first day, and healing usually becomes much easier.
Stick with soft foods and chew away from the extraction area. Rest rather than pushing through a hard workout. Follow the specific instructions your dentist gave you because they know how difficult your extraction was.
A little blood can look scary. A steadily worsening flow is different. And once the bleeding has clearly slowed, the best thing you can often do is stop checking the socket every ten minutes. Your mouth knows what it’s doing.
